The math only works if the required spending was already in your budget. Stretch to hit the threshold and you’ve bought the bonus, not earned it. Carry a balance and the deal collapses entirely, since interest charges outrun rewards almost immediately.
Three numbers decide whether an offer is worth taking: the minimum spend, the window to meet it (typically three months), and the annual fee. Check them in that order. Then look at your next few months for big planned expenses: an insurance premium, a car repair, travel you’ve already booked, holiday shopping. Applying just before expenses like these lets routine spending clear the threshold without changing a single habit.
If the card charges an annual fee, subtract it from the bonus to get the true first-year value, then decide whether the card still earns its keep in year two. And space out applications. Issuers cap how often you can earn bonuses, and a burst of new accounts dents your credit score.
The best moment to open a rewards card is right before spending you already planned. Let the bonus chase your budget, never the other way around.
