Just the Tip:

When buying a car, factor in insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration, and depreciation, not just the purchase price. A $30,000 car can cost $10,000 or more per year in total ownership costs. Compare vehicles on what you’ll spend over five years of ownership, because the monthly payment is the least useful number.

Dealers know most buyers shop the monthly payment, so that’s the number they put in front of you. Stretch the loan a year or two and almost any car on the lot looks affordable.

The payment hides everything else. AAA’s annual driving-cost study puts the full cost of owning a new car near $1,000 a month once you count insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration, financing, and depreciation. Depreciation is the biggest piece, and it never appears on a bill. A typical new car sheds thousands of dollars in value every year. You only feel it when you sell or trade.

That’s why two cars with similar stickers can cost wildly different amounts to own. A model with cheap insurance, good fuel economy, and strong resale value can save you thousands over five years compared to one that looked like the same deal on the lot. A luxury badge can double routine service costs, and some vehicles lose half their value in five years while others hold most of it.

Before you commit, run every car on your shortlist through a five-year cost-to-own tool. Edmunds’ True Cost to Own and Kelley Blue Book’s 5-Year Cost to Own are both free, and both break down depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and fees for the exact models you’re considering.

Then call your insurer for a real quote on the specific model and trim before you sign. Premiums can swing hundreds of dollars a year between cars in the same class, and it’s the one ownership cost you can price precisely in advance.

Negotiate the purchase price, but judge the car on the five-year total. That’s the number that decides what it actually costs you.
