Term Life Insurance Is Almost Always the Right Choice Over Whole Life

The price gap is wider than most people guess. NerdWallet’s 2026 rate data puts a 20-year, $500,000 term policy at about $53 a month for a healthy 40-year-old. Whole life coverage at the same amount averages $557 a month, more than ten times the cost.

Insurers justify the markup by framing whole life as insurance plus an investment. Part of each premium builds cash value you can borrow against, and coverage lasts your entire life. What the pitch skips is how badly that investment performs. Fees and agent commissions consume much of the early premiums, cash value builds slowly, and long-run returns lag a plain index fund. Agents also earn far bigger commissions on whole life. No wonder it gets sold so hard.

The common objection, that term coverage wastes premiums if you outlive it, gets the product backwards. Insurance exists to protect your family during the years they depend on your income, not to double as a savings account. Your homeowners policy doesn’t refund premiums because the house never burned down.

Buy a term policy sized at 10 to 12 times your annual income, with a term that runs until the mortgage is paid and the kids are independent. Then invest the difference, the $400 or $500 a month you didn’t spend on whole life, in your 401(k) or IRA. Compounded over 20 or 30 years, that gap routinely outgrows what a whole life policy’s cash value would reach.

Whole life earns its keep in narrow cases: estate planning for wealthy families, or lifelong coverage for a dependent with special needs. For everyone else, the cheap policy plus a funded retirement account wins.
