Just the Tip:

You can claim Social Security as early as 62, but your benefit grows every year you wait, including 8% per year between full retirement age and 70. Waiting from 62 to 70 can raise your monthly check by more than 75%. Delay if you’re healthy and have other income to draw from.

That waiting game pays better than almost anything else in retirement planning. No stock or bond promises you a guaranteed 8% annual raise, yet that’s what Social Security hands you for every year you hold off past full retirement age.

The math comes straight from the Social Security Administration’s formula. If your full retirement age is 67, true for everyone born in 1960 or later, claiming at 62 locks in just 70% of your full benefit. Holding out until 70 earns delayed retirement credits that push you to 124%. That gap, 70 versus 124, works out to a 77% bigger check every month for life. Cost-of-living adjustments compound on the larger base too, so the dollar advantage keeps widening as you age.

The bridge years are the hard part. Cover them by working longer, spending down taxable accounts or pre-tax retirement savings first, or both. Tapping an IRA in your 60s while your benefit grows also shrinks the taxable withdrawals the IRS will eventually require from those accounts.

Married couples get an extra lever. When the higher earner delays, that larger check becomes the survivor benefit for whichever spouse lives longer. The break-even age typically lands around 80. Die sooner and claiming early would have paid more. Live past it and delaying wins by a growing margin each year.

If your health is shaky or Social Security is your only income source, claiming earlier can be the right call. The strategy only works when you can afford the wait.

Never delay past 70, since the credits stop there. Before you decide, pull your statement at ssa.gov and compare your projected checks at 62, 67, and 70. Three numbers side by side will make the case for patience better than any rule of thumb.
