Just the Tip:
A rotating-category card pays 5% only if you activate each quarter’s categories. Skip activation and most of those purchases earn just 1%. Set a recurring reminder for the first day of every quarter and activate that day, since some issuers pay the 5% only from your activation date forward.
Discover is one of them. On a Discover it Cash Back card, the 5% runs from the first day of the quarter or the day you activate, whichever is later, so category purchases made before you activate earn 1%.
Chase backdates the 5%. Activate a Chase Freedom Flex by the deadline, December 14 this quarter, and it pays 5% on every category purchase since October 1. Both cards cap the bonus at $1,500 of category spending a quarter, or $75 back. Max out all four quarters and that’s $300 a year, against $60 on the same spending at 1%.
For October through December 2026, the Freedom Flex pays 5% on dining, at grocery stores other than Walmart and Target, and on donations to the American Red Cross. Discover pays 5% at restaurants, on entertainment tickets such as movies, concerts, and live sports, and on utilities. Its utilities category covers electricity, natural gas, and water, plus phone, internet, and cable service paid online or by phone.
Each issuer posts its categories on a 5% calendar page. Discover’s covers the whole year, and Chase’s adds each quarter in advance. Both let you activate online, in their apps, by phone, or through their activation emails. Set a recurring reminder for January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1, and activate every rotating card you carry that day.
Then time bigger purchases to match the categories. Holiday groceries and a year-end gift to the Red Cross both fit the Freedom Flex this quarter, and tickets for a winter concert or game fit the Discover card if you buy them by December 31. Past $1,500 in a quarter, category purchases fall back to 1%, so switch to a card that pays a flat 2% for the rest.
If a reminder four times a year is one chore too many, skip the rotating card and use the flat 2% card for everything. It pays double the 1% an unactivated rotating card earns on most purchases.
