In this Q&A, Mr. Bertacchini discusses the influence of the arts on him early on, celebrating multicultural perspectives and an undying passion for the craft, whatever form it may take.

What was your first job ever? What did it teach you?
I went to a British school as a kid back in Brazil. They used to promote the English language through a robust art and culture department, which licensed plays and invested in music and theater productions.
I was very involved with that, first as a musician and actor, but later, on the production side of things. My first job was within that department in my school.
This experience taught me the profound impact the arts can have on people. It also gave me a broader perspective on the power of lateral thinking to achieve meaningful results.
While my school, as part of a British government mission abroad, aimed to promote British culture and language, it ultimately did much more. It enriched the cultural scene of the time and profoundly influenced many young, curious minds through art — mine included.
The lateral thinking I developed then continues to shape how I approach challenges today.
Which skills have been critical to your success? Did you gain these skills within or outside of the workplace?
As designers, we are constantly aiming to evolve and never remain static. I would have thought one of the most critical skills to any designer’s success is the ability to gain perspective.
In my case, growing up in Brazil for 25 years while having an Italian background and being British, has given me a deep understanding of how different cultures operate. This exposure has been invaluable, especially in design, where cultural context plays a huge role in shaping ideas, aesthetics and user experiences.
That skill is something acquired both inside and outside the workplace, through professional projects that required a global mindset and through personal experiences of navigating and adapting to different cultural environments. Being able to see things from multiple perspectives helps me and our global teams, who are also from multiple backgrounds, to create designs that are hopefully not just functional, but also tell a story and resonate with diverse audiences.
Another key skill I constantly encourage our teams to exercise is strategic thinking, which I’ve honed through years of working across international markets. Understanding how people from different backgrounds think, behave and interact allows us to anticipate challenges and create solutions that work on a global scale.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Listen, whether to people, ideas or what’s happening around us. It’s easy to assume we know the answers, but the real insights come from paying attention and understanding before reacting.
The answers you want sometimes are lying behind what has not been said.
How has your field changed since you started out in luxury, and what do you think your industry will look like in a decade?
Design is a human expression, constantly evolving with the times. Yet good design endures, it transcends its era. Its best expressions have always been true to their time, reflecting the political and cultural landscapes, but they were also bold, nonconformist and willing to challenge the status quo, exploring concepts beyond perceived normality.
The luxury market follows a similar rhythm. It moves in sync with cultural shifts yet remains a constant in its essence.
As designers, we must stay curious, strive for the best design solutions, ask the right questions and create work that is both relevant and beautiful – design that has a meaningful, positive impact on its intended use.
Looking ahead, I believe the next decade will respond to our collective call for a more sustainable approach to materiality and supply chains. While significant progress has been made in recent years, true change takes time, often a generation, to fully evolve. I am hopeful that these principles will continue to shape the future of our industry.
What recent projects have ignited your passion for working in luxury?
I don’t believe there’s just one project in particular, although Cipriani Residences Miami continues to inspire my passion for the design of luxury residences, since bringing the renowned hospitality brand’s vision to life thus far has been very fulfilling. It’s been a great experience weaving Cipriani’s rich cultural heritage into an authentic residential experience within the fabric of Miami’s real estate landscape.
I come from a theater and fashion background, having worked for a variety of houses — particularly within the LVMH group. As a child, I vividly remember sitting with my great-grandaunts as they knitted and embroidered the most beautiful, colorful designs onto linen, dresses and jackets. I would join them, trying my hand at it, and they taught me so much about detail and technique.
To this day, I am still mesmerized by master-craft artisans — their passion, their expressions as they pursue perfection, the knowing smile at the corner of their faces. I guess it all started there.
This feeling transcends beyond just objects or products; it can be observed in all art forms: painting, drawing, sculpture. From my early days curating interior retail spaces, setting up product displays as a visual merchandiser or orchestrating the theater of window displays — with all its props, lighting and set design — to now shaping and curating interior spaces and architecture, the transition has felt natural and fluid.
You see, we love what we do. And like those artisans with their knowing smiles, like the silent wisdom of my great-grandaunts, we pursue our craft with passion, striving for perfection in intention — not necessarily to reach it, but never quitting in the process.
Who, in any industry or sphere, would you most like to share a long lunch with and where would you take them?
Well, that list could get long real fast!
But if I had to choose one, it would be Maya Angelou, the American memoirist, poet and civil rights activist. Although she’s no longer with us, her wisdom and mesmerizing talent endure. I devoured her work when I first discovered it and it still lives in my mind today.
Her personality was just as powerful as her words. I could spend hours watching her performances and interviews. She had a way of commanding a room with both grace and strength. I think it would be a brunch to remember.
How do you get into the right mindset before a big meeting or presentation?
Here at 1508, we work collaboratively, so the perceived pressure of big meetings or presentations is eased by that knowledge. We know everyone in the room wants the same successful outcome for the project.
It’s true that sometimes, outwardly, we need to present and articulate ideas, but we focus more on empathy, really understanding and connecting with our audience. The moment you level with them and know who they are, the interaction becomes more fluid, more like a conversation than a formal presentation. That makes it easier to convey ideas and solutions.
But most importantly, know your subject. When you truly understand your work, all the passion and excitement poured into developing the designs will transpire and reach the audience. Passion is truly contagious.
On your days off, what can you be found doing to relax or have some fun?
Peace and true bliss come in the shape of a cup of coffee, several magazines (I like the real thing) and a little background music on the silence of an early Saturday morning. Nothing beats it.
That is often followed by an intense workout. I think the best ideas often happen after losing and finding your breath.
Good food, family, self-care, new places. Depending on where I am, one of those will be most certainly on the agenda for the day.
What does luxury mean to you?
I would sum it up as the notion of emotional connection and authenticity.
As I mentioned earlier, luxury is found in the absolute devotion of craftsmen and women as they refine their craft. The silent knowing, the wisdom of the desired outcome. It is the undying pursuit of perfection, where passion is translated into purpose and nothing is rushed, yet everything is considered.
Luxury is the curated abundance of simplicity in the most intricate of things. Where every detail is intentional and excellence is felt rather than just seen.
Whether a product or service/experience, what is your favorite luxury indulgence?
Without being biased, a self-care day at the Cipriani Residences Miami Residents’ Spa would not go amiss. It’s one of our favorite spaces in the development and, personally, I cannot wait to try it.
