Indigo Ag and Google have announced a partnership aimed at replenishing 1.5 billion gallons of water over the next seven years through regenerative agriculture practices.
Google’s $1.5 million investment will support regenerative farming on enrolled farms in Oklahoma, increasing soil moisture and groundwater retention.
Indigo Ag is a marketplace for buyers and sellers of sustainable agricultural materials. It connects growers to buyers and assists with the logistics of shipping their crops. The company’s regenerative agriculture program provides financial incentives for farmers to adopt practices such as cover cropping and no-till farming, which improve soil health and enhance water retention.
Indigo Ag and Google partnership for water replenishment
Google and Indigo Ag plan to launch the program this fall and run it through 2032. It will cover thousands of acres near Google’s data center in Pryor, Oklahoma. The companies expect the initiative to strengthen crop resilience to drought and improve watershed health.
Google’s investment also aligns with its broader goal to replenish 120% of the freshwater it consumes across its offices and data centers by 2030.
“This collaboration reflects our commitment to supporting healthy watersheds in the communities where we operate,” said Ben Townsend, Google’s head of infrastructure strategy and sustainability. “By providing farmers with the resources to adopt water-saving practices, we’re creating tangible benefits for local watersheds.”
Dean Banks, CEO of Indigo Ag, highlighted the importance of the partnership.
“Our collaboration with Google marks a significant step toward measurable, positive environmental impact,” Banks said. “We are committed to working with Google and other technology leaders to support sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.”
The program’s water savings will be measured using a process-based model that simulates the impact of weather, soil, and land management on water quantity. Indigo Ag’s established measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) platform will monitor progress and ensure transparency.
“This initiative can serve as a model for how technology leaders can meet their climate goals through sustainable agriculture,” said Ewan Lamont, head of sustainability solutions at Indigo Ag.
