Just the Tip:

You can work out how much Halloween candy you need before you buy a single bag. Count the trick-or-treaters you expect and plan one or two pieces for each. Then buy bulk or store-brand bags in the last week of October, so the candy is still there on Halloween night.

The first bag of Halloween candy you buy often isn’t the last. In Talker Research’s 2025 survey of 2,000 adults, the average respondent said they finish off their candy twice before trick-or-treating even starts.

That’s an expensive habit. The National Retail Federation expects Halloween shoppers to spend an average of $115.14 each in 2026, and candy makes up $4.1 billion of the $13.5 billion total. Buy on October 27 instead of October 5, and your household has four days to eat the bag instead of almost four weeks.

Base your count on how many kids came last year, or ask a neighbor if you’re new to the street. Then compare bags by the price per piece. Divide each price by the piece count on the label, check a warehouse club’s bulk bag against your grocery store’s own brand, and load your store app’s digital coupons before you pay.

Say you expect 80 kids, give each two pieces, and find a bulk bag that works out to 12 cents a piece. That’s 160 pieces for about $19. Skip the $40 of extra bags you used to add to be safe, and you spend $19 instead of $59.

Pick candy your household doesn’t love, so the bowl stays untouched until Halloween. When it runs out, switch off the porch light instead of making the last-minute candy run that more than half the adults in that survey say they still make. For a November party or holiday baking, wait for the clearance that starts November 1, when stores mark leftover Halloween candy down, often to half off or more within a few days.

Before bed on Halloween, write down how many kids came. Next year, you’ll shop from a real count instead of a guess.
