At 242 million, Nigeria’s 2026 population is the largest in Africa and the sixth most populous worldwide, behind India (1.48 billion), China (1.41 billion), the United States (349 million), Indonesia (288 million), and Pakistan (259 million) — all according to the United Nations.

Euromonitor estimates Nigeria’s retail sales across online and offline channels at NGN25.4 trillion ($19.0 billion) in 2025. Euromonitor’s “Retail E-Commerce in Nigeria” report puts retail ecommerce-only sales at NGN492 billion ($368 million), up 29% from the previous year.

By comparison, total U.S. 2025 retail and ecommerce-only sales were $5.3 trillion and $1.2 trillion, respectively, per the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources.

Still, DHL’s “2026 E-Commerce Trends Report” (PDF) named Nigeria alongside Türkiye and Malaysia as a market that “consistently outperform[s] the global average across all platforms” in expected ecommerce growth.

Products and channels

Nigeria’s top 2025 retail ecommerce categories per Euromonitor were beauty and personal care, apparel and footwear, and wearable electronics.

Jumia, the pan-African marketplace, and Konga, the Nigerian retailer and marketplace, were the country’s largest retail ecommerce companies by sales in 2025. Jumia accounted for 54% of the total, followed by Konga at 16%.

Payments

Worldpay, the global payment-processing firm, estimates (PDF) that account-to-account payments accounted for 44% of Nigerian ecommerce transaction value in 2025. Debit cards were 24%, digital wallets 13%, and cash 11%. Credit cards and prepaid cards each represented 3%, while buy-now, pay-later accounted for 2%.

Cross-border trade

Cross-border shopping is common among Nigerian consumers. The DHL report stated that 69% of Nigerian respondents surveyed said they buy from retailers in other countries.

Nigeria belongs to ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), a free-trade zone of 18 countries with a common tariff imposed on the rest of the world. Those tariffs range from 5% to 35% depending on the category.

Nigeria largely follows the ECOWAS base tariffs but adds charges to imports of alcohol, tobacco, luxury goods, and vehicles. A separate 7.5% value-added tax applies to most categories, except food, medical, educational, agricultural, and a few others.

Nigeria introduced a $300 de minimis threshold in 2025. Qualifying low-value imports within the threshold are exempt from customs duties and taxes, up to four shipments per person (the purchaser) per year.

The government-run Nigeria Trade Portal covers tariffs, permits, documentation, and more. SONCAP, another government organization, verifies, tests, and certifies certain import categories.
