Just the Tip:

Under the credit bureaus’ own rules, a medical collection shouldn’t appear on your credit report if you’ve paid it, if its original balance was under $500, or if the bill is less than a year past due. If one appears anyway, dispute it with each bureau that lists it, and attach proof it breaks the rule.

Those rules outlived the federal ban. In July 2025, a federal court threw out the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) rule meant to keep medical debt off credit reports. Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion adopted the rules in 2022 and 2023 and still follow them.

No other kind of debt gets that protection. Pay off any other collection, and it can still sit on your report for as long as seven years. A medical collection with an original balance under $500 should never appear, even unpaid, and a paid one should be deleted, with no sign it was ever in default.

Pull all three reports free at AnnualCreditReport.com, where you can check them every week. For each medical collection, note whether it’s marked paid, its original balance, and when the bill first went past due.

When one breaks a rule, dispute it with every bureau that shows it, online or by mail. Say which rule, and attach proof, such as a paid-in-full letter or the original bill showing the balance and due date. The bureau has to investigate, free of charge.

Check your state’s law too. More than a dozen states, including California and New York, have their own limits on medical debt in credit reports, and some go further than the bureaus’ rules. The CFPB said in 2025 that federal law overrides those state limits, and the courts haven’t settled it, so cite your state’s rule in the dispute anyway.

Keep the next bill out of collections altogether by asking about the hospital’s financial assistance policy, setting up a payment plan, or negotiating the bill down. If one slips past due anyway, you have a year before it can reach your reports, and once it’s paid, it never will.
